Behind the scenes, we have been working hard over the last few months to significantly update our back-end system capabilities and online quote form to develop an enhanced and improved platform which caters to the needs of drone operators both now and in the future. And we’re so excited to finally be able to share the details with you now.
The new system is designed to provide a seamless online journey for drone operators wherever possible, reducing the number of instances where a quote needs to be referred into an underwriter for approval. The enhancements are now live for existing clients at point of their next renewal and will be rolled out for new business quotes in early September.
Going forward, our underwriting rules have now been built into the enhanced system so a quote can be generated in the following instances without the need for manual intervention:
Whilst there will, of course, still be some instances where an underwriter needs to get involved based on the information you have provided on the quote form before any terms are offered, the new system will see underwriting referrals now become the exception, rather than the rule.
By making these changes, we believe we now offer a better solution for those clients who prefer to manage their own policies online, by reducing the frictional touchpoints at quote stage to deliver a more streamlined and efficient service.
Andrew Heath, Director of Coverdrone, said: “As key players in the drone insurance market, we have always been relied on and trusted by drone operators to offer an effective solution that fully meets both their current and long-term insurance needs. The insurance needs of drone operators are changing, and our systems and internal underwriting procedures have needed to adapt with them to ensure we continue to be there for operators in the way they need us to be.
Clients may have noticed us making small incremental improvements to our systems over the last few months. This has included introducing the capability for clients to be able to add an additional insured to their policy online, without needing to call us to make the changes. We also recently forged a new partnership with Travelers, extending our underwriting capabilities to allow us to write even more drone insurance business.
These collective improvements, aided by the significant investment into both our systems and processes, all help support our ambitious growth plans to be the number one drone insurance provider for recreational and commercial drone operators worldwide.
We are sure these enhancements will be most welcomed by our clients and make it much easier to purchase drone insurance going forward as drone utilisation evolves.”

So, for drone operators who have multiple drones, extended flight permissions or a large sums insured value, they now have the ability to go online on a Friday evening, get a quote and buy insurance there and then if they want to, without waiting for an underwriter to come into the office to review and approve the quote on a Monday morning.
But, if you prefer to be guided through the process by knowledgeable and trusted experts, our friendly and helpful team are still here – in the way we always have been – to provide assistance and support.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not necessarily. The changes are designed to drastically reduce the number of instances where a quote needs to be automatically referred to an underwriter to review. However, there may still be some instances where underwriter approval is required before any terms are offered. With the system enhancements, this will however now be the exception, rather than the rule.
The reality is that the drone industry is evolving. How operators use their drones is also changing.
Drone ‘swarms’ were relatively unheard of until a few years ago. The number of authorised operators flying beyond the visual line of sight is increasing at a phenomenal rate. Drone deliveries will soon become much more prevalent in our skies. The number of commercial operators using larger and heavier drones which command higher sums insured is rising.
And we recognise our need to adapt too. Our day-to-day interactions with clients, listening to the feedback and suggestions you make, close inspection of what quotes currently refer and the reasons why, as well as initiatives like the Coverdrone Drone User Study, all help us to build a clear picture on how both recreational and commercial drone operators currently use their drones. They also help us to understand how we can modernise and update our own processes and internal procedures to make getting a quote and buying drone insurance easier than ever.
It’s only by evolving what we do and how we do it that we believe we can truly deliver our aim to provide a valuable and flexible insurance product for drone operators that is easy to purchase, offers real peace of mind and protection should something happen, and is underpinned by helpful, friendly and expert support at every step.
That’s absolutely fine. The team are always happy to discuss your options with you and provide support and advice to make sure the cover selected meets your needs.
No, we do not restrict the number of drones that can be added to a policy.
We only stipulate that you are flying legally and you fully comply with your local/regional aviation regulations for our cover to remain in force. As long as you have the appropriate permission to fly Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), you will be covered in the event of a claim.
We do not restrict the number of operators/pilots we can cover on our commercial drone insurance policies. Our commercial drone insurance is designed to insure you as a business, and will automatically cover any ‘authorised operators’ approved by and working in connection with you.
We would class an ‘authorised operator’ as a person who is operating, controlling or piloting the drone and is:
- properly trained and qualified to do so, and holds all the required certification;
- under test conditions and in the presence of a qualified examiner; or
- practicing their flights on their own before they take their test flight.
When completing a new quote, you will see a section for ‘Additional Insureds’. Simply select ‘Yes’ and a new box will appear. Select the number of additional insureds required and add their name into the text boxes provided.
You will then need to read and tick the declaration and click ‘save and exit’. You can then continue to complete your quote as normal.
